Review – 2024

The first week of June saw the Great & the Good of UK Theatre industry gather again up in Alexandra Palace [400ft above sea level] for business, education, chat, chit and indeed chitchat.

A massive boost for the ABTT VIP scheme came in seeing two of last years’ concept submissions grown up & developed into working prototypes and actual products on the stands of Flints & Triple E…..both wearing the VIP badge with pride…..

The ABTT Trade Show – now in its 44th year [I was certainly at the third one & have been to most of the subsequent shows in the various venues over the years…..] hosting an amazing programme of seminars & workshops, covering everything from techniques for secreting microphones in costumes to mental health for technicians & the wonderful updated Green Book 2.0.

In the Main Hall, 160+ exhibitors including associations, educators, recruiters as well as companies specialising in 3D, AV, Comms, Costume, Consultancy, Drapes, Engineering, Flooring, Lighting, Production, Props. Pyrotechnics, Rigging, Seating, Sound, Scenic design, Technical Equipment Suppliers, Theatre Design and Wardrobe displayed their latest developments.

ABTT VIP was in attendance for the third consecutive year and once again scored a direct hit with one of our ‘23/’24 submissions – seeing three global name manufacturers in the rigging sector expressing solid interest in Steve Macluskie’s “Beam Strap” innovation. A lightweight beam clamp derivative, designed to take the hassle and mass out of hanging production loads on steel I-beams, ‘Beam Strap’ will undoubtedly be a firm fixture in many a riggers toolbag in the coming year or two. One visitor advised that Steve took out a global patent – as they see a massive future for the product.

VIP had assisted & supported Steve in the early stages of design development, with patent advice & guidance, technical tweaks and now building a working prototype. We’re load-testing the model under trial conditions – just to prove the concept – before handing it over to his preferred commercial partner for the next stage on the design pathway.

If you have an idea – no matter how scratchy – we can assist & support you in getting it to a working format with senior level guidance from the collected brains & experience on the combined ABTT Committees.

Our magnificent partners – Guildhall School of Music & Drama – fund selected small development work, which could enable us to build your first working prototype and present it to next years Trade Show visitors.
